McEnroe Quits French Open With Bad Back
John McEnroe, the flamboyant, former No. 1 performer, has withdrawn from the French Open because of a bad back, the tournament referee announced today.
McEnroe, the world’s top-ranked men’s tennis player from 1981 to 1984, was seeded sixth in the $4.5-million tournament, the second Grand Slam event of the year.
The American was injured recently in an exhibition in the Netherlands and withdrew from the Italian Open last week. He had won tournaments in Lyon, France, and Dallas this year.
