College Roundup : CLU’s Cohen Advances in Tennis Finals
Tony Cohen of Cal Lutheran, the NAIA District 3 men’s tennis champion, continued his recent hot streak by advancing into the fourth round of singles play with a pair of wins Tuesday at the NAIA championships at Rockhill Country Club in Kansas City, Mo. Cohen also teamed with Matt Simpson to win a first-round doubles match, and Cal Lutheran moved into a three-way tie for fifth place in team standings.
In his first match, Cohen defeated Ernesto Tovaret of Harding (Ark.) College, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. In his second match, Cohen upset sixth-seeded Stefan Hagart of Elon (N. C.) College, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, Cohen and Simpson defeated Enrique Valero and Rua Martinez of Harding (Ark.) College, 7-5, 6-4. Simpson and teammate Mike Gennette won second-round singles matches but lost in their afternoon matches.
In other doubles, Cal Lutheran’s Paavo Salmi and Gennette defeated 10th-seeded Charlie Singer and David Head of Texas Tyler College, 6-4, 6-4, and George Kovacs and Brian Turner beat John Bail and Paul Marak of Baker (Kan.) University, 6-1, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3).
Division II golf championships--Play in the first round at Lake View Country Club in Erie, Penn., was postponed because of rain. Northridge is in the field.
