50% of China Paper’s Editorial Staff Quits Over Commentary

Share

Half the editorial staff of a New York-based Chinese newspaper quit after the publisher demanded that they print his commentary urging the use of troops to restore order in Beijing, it was reported today.

Four reporters, two editors and the editor in chief walked out of the Center Daily on Wednesday, two hours before the paper’s 10 a.m. press time, the New York Times said.

The Center Daily’s publisher, Chaochu Fu, called on typists and graphic editors to compose the front page to include his article, to which the editor in chief and others had objected, saying it was reactionary.

The chaos created by the walkout at the Center Daily led to the paper’s Wednesday editions being printed in two sections instead of the usual four.
