NWA Deal Would Be Scrutinized: U.S. Transportation Secretary Samuel K. Skinner said his department would look closely at an acquisition of NWA Inc., the parent of Northwest Airlines, especially a leveraged buyout “that would have a substantial adverse impact on a carrier’s financial structure.” In a letter to NWA Chairman and Chief Executive Steven G. Rothmeier, Skinner said the department would also carefully review any takeover that involved transfering NWA routes to another carrier. At least three parties--Pan Am, Los Angeles investor Marvin Davis and Los Angeles financier Alfred A. Checchi--are interested in buying NWA.
