Veteran Cal State Fullerton history professor Warren A. Beck, an expert on western America, is this year’s recipient of the university’s Outstanding Professor Award.

Beck, who began teaching at the institution in 1961, was recommended to President Jewel Plummer Cobb by the university’s outstanding professor search committee. Beck was recognized for his teaching, research and university and community service. The award carries with it a $4,000 cash prize.

Beck is the author of 10 books, including “New Mexico: A History of Four Centuries,” now in its 14th printing. His most recent work, a historical atlas of World War II, has just been published. Beck, a former chairman of the university’s history department, is also credited with shaping the history instruction at the university.

Teaching is a partnership, Beck said. “I take pride in helping those enrolled in my classes over the years. In the final analysis though, I often wonder if they have not educated me rather than my educating them.”
