UC Irvine professor Ray Catalano, a former Irvine city councilman and prominent slow-growth advocate, has decided to take a teaching and research job at UC Berkeley.

Catalano, 42, said his new position will allow him to spend all his time on teaching and research.

“It was a difficult decision,” said Catalano, who also served on the Irvine Planning Commission. “But for me, this is an opportunity that comes only once in a professional career.”

Catalano, a UCI professor for the last 16 years, said more than half of his academic time is taken up by administrative duties.

“When I get to Berkeley, they just want me to do my science and my teaching,” he said.

William Parker, associate executive vice chancellor at UCI, said Catalano will be missed because of his diverse interests in research, community involvement, academic administration and teaching.

“It’s the combination that makes Ray such a unique person,” Parker said.

Catalano will earn $72,000 a year in his new job. He was paid $64,000 annually at UC Irvine.
