The Bruin classic held at MGM Filmland on May 13 netted $163,000 for the UCLA Intervention Program for Handicapped Children. Kathy Hampar was chairwoman. Auction chairs were Geraldine Gross and Ruth Lebowitz.

The Second City benefit performance held at Mayfair Music Hall on May 16 netted $33,000 for Westside Children’s Center, an organization that recruits parents to care for abused children. Martin and Nancy Short hosted the event.

The benefit gala held on May 17 at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Little Tokyo netted between $80,000 and $90,000 for the center. Mistress of Ceremonies was Kathryn Doi Todd.

The benefit dinner for the Churchill Foundation at the Beverly Hilton on May 17 netted more than $850,000 for scholarships and fellowships for American graduate students to study at Cambridge University.

The “Phantom of the Opera” benefit at The Music Center on May 20 netted an estimated $750,000 for the Center Theatre Group. Nancy Vreeland and Terri Childs were co-chairwomen.

The benefit ball for ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) held on May 20 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire netted $475,000. Nadine Acker was chairwoman.

The 36th annual SHARE Boomtown Party held on May 20 at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium netted an estimated $1.2 million for programs for the retarded and other charities SHARE supports. Pam Korman and Roni Sue Malin were co-chairs.

Concern Foundation’s 15th Annual Rodeo Block Party on May 21 raised almost $750,000 for cancer research. Rebecca Golden, Anne Barnett and Mathew Schryro co-chaired.

The 10th Annual Venice Art Walk held on May 21 netted an estimated $600,000 for the Venice Family Clinic. Sheila Goldberg was chairwoman.
