A 67-year-old man who apparently suffered a heart attack while windsurfing was rescued Saturday by four men who saw him fall unconscious into Newport Bay, Newport Beach Sgt. Pat O’Sullivan said.

The victim, Jack Schwarze of Costa Mesa, was reported in critical condition Sunday at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, a nursing supervisor said.

According to O’Sullivan, Schwarze was windsurfing when he fell unconscious into the bay near 18th Street. Four men--Peter Giacobbo, 50, of Villa Park; John Jeffries, 25, of Santa Ana; Deryn Modoff, 24, of Irvine, and Terry O’Shea, 31, of Newport Beach, pulled him ashore. Another person summoned two police officers, who administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived, O’Sullivan said.
