A $1-million grant has been received by USC from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to enhance undergraduate biological science programs at the Los Angeles campus.

M. Michael Appleman, director of instructional programs for the university’s department of biological sciences, said the funds will make “an important contribution to the university’s activities as a major academic and research institution.”

About $350,000 of the grant will be used to encourage and prepare high school students to enter university programs leading to medical and biological science careers.

Another $150,000 will be used to involve more faculty members in instruction and recruitment while a similar amount will be spent on increasing honors courses and developing state-of-the-art laboratory courses at the campus.

The other $350,000 is for development and support of outreach programs for high school science teachers.
