Long Beach : Blessing of the Fleet to Mark National Safe Boating Week
A Navy chaplain is scheduled to offer a “blessing of protection at sea” to boats and yachts in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday in the waters off Shoreline Village in Long Beach.
The fourth Blessing of the Fleet, which will include a parade of decorated boats, is intended to commemorate National Safe Boating Week, according to the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
The 82-foot Coast Guard cutter Point Bridge will escort boats into Queensway Bay where Chaplain Douglas Kroll is scheduled to offer the blessing. Balloons will be released from the boats and the Queen Mary will blast her whistle.
The cutter, a Coast Guard helicopter and a lifeguard boat will participate in a simulated rescue of a boater who falls overboard, an auxiliary spokeswoman said.
