The UCLA women’s track team, which has won three straight Pacific 10 Conference championships, has 11 athletes who competing in as many as 13 events in the NCAA meet through Saturday at Provo, Utah.

Qualifying for the NCAAs last week in different meets were hurdlers Nicolle Thompson (13.6), Tiffany Smith (13.44 wind-aided) and Nikki Williams (13.53 wind) in 100 meters, shot-putter Tracie Millet with a lifetime best of 49-9 and Caryl Smith with an 11.43 in the 100-meter dash.

Since Janeene Vickers had already qualified for the 100 hurdles, the Bruins have four entrants in that event.

Other Bruin qualifiers and their events are Tonya Sedwick (heptathlon, 200, long jump, both relays); Vickers (100 and 400 hurdles, both relays); Millet (shot put, javelin, discus); Kris Larson (shot put, discus), Laura Chapel (800, 1,500); Caryl Smith (100, both relays); Tiffany Smith (100 hurdles, 400 relay); Julie Johnson (800, 1,600 relay), Thompson (100 hurdles), Williams (100 hurdles) and Nancy Brown (3,000).

At last year’s NCAA meet, the Bruins finished second to Louisiana State, 61-58, as UCLA’s 1,600-relay team took first place and the 400-relay team was second. Individuals who scored points for the Bruins last year were Millet, who was third in the discus; Larson, fourth in discus; Vickers, fourth in 400 hurdles and on the winning 1,600 relay team, and Sedwick and Caryl Smith on the 400 relay team.

UCLA’s last NCAA championship came in 1983 at Houston and in 1982 at Provo. In 1982, individual national titles were won by Jackie Joyner (now Joyner-Kersee) in the heptathlon and Florence Griffith (now Griffith-Joyner) at 200 meters.

Jackie Steinmann, coach of UCLA’s women’s golf team for 12 years, was named to the College Women’s Golf Coaches Hall of Fame at last week’s NCAA championships at Stanford.

UCLA junior Jean Zedlitz, named an All-American for her play in the regular season, shot 306 for 72 holes to tie for 24th place at the NCAAs. Bruin freshman Christy Erb came in with a 311, tying for 32nd.
