MILAN, Italy — An unprecedented strike by Italian professional soccer players may halt the major league June 11, depriving millions of Italian soccer fans of their weekly pleasure.
Nine championship matches are at risk after an announcement today by the National Players Assn. Sergio Campana, association president, called for a strike of major-league players following a dispute with the Italian Federation over equalizing contracts to meet European standards.
Federation President Antonio Matarrese said a solution of the controversy could be negotiated at Tuesday’s meeting of the league.
