Boy, 16, Accused of Shooting at Officer
A 16-year-old gang member was being held Friday at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey after he fired a pistol from the steps of a Norwalk church on Wednesday and narrowly missed a passing sheriff’s deputy, authorities said.
When deputies chased down the Norwalk youth they found another bullet jammed in the chamber of his .22-caliber pistol, indicating that he had attempted another shot, Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Monarrez said. Deputy Eric Barbour, 30, was patroling on Shoemaker Avenue and driving by St. Linus Catholic Church when the youth, who was standing on the church steps with other teen-agers, fired at him “for no apparent reason,” Monarrez said.
The youth, whose name was withheld because of his age, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
