Transient Gets 35-Year Prison Term in Slaying
A35-year-old transient was sentenced by a San Fernando Superior Court judge to 35 years to life in prison for the shooting death of a Burbank prostitute.
Daniel Leon Martinez was convicted last month of first-degree murder in the Dec. 2 killing of 22-year-old Camela Dawn Szafranscki, who authorities said worked as a prostitute after she moved to Southern California from Michigan in April, 1987.
She was missing for 10 days before her boyfriend discovered her body in a Granada Hills office building, Deputy Dist. Atty. Sue G. Lasicka said.
Martinez was arrested four days after the slaying when police pulled him over for a traffic violation in the same area and discovered that he was driving the woman’s car, Lasicka said.
According to court documents, Martinez was wearing a bloodstained shirt at the time of his arrest and had bloody panties and jewels later identified as belonging to the victim.
