Cleveland’s status as the future home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum could be in jeopardy. The New York-based Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation has put the city on notice that it must raise $40 million by Nov. 15 or risk forfeiting the project. Robert R. Broadbent, chairman of the local board of trustees, told Billboard magazine that to date, hall officials have secured $16.4 million in commitments from Ohio firms and foundations. Cleveland Mayor George Voinovich expressed confidence that the city could raise the rest of the money. “The (city) council is on board and the people are totally behind the project,” he said.

The Who’s upcoming Universal Amphitheatre performance of its rock opera “Tommy” will air as a same-day, pay-per-view event on Aug. 24. . . . Prince has produced a new album by R&B; veteran Mavis Staples. The album, “Time Waits For No One,” was just released on Prince’s Warner Bros.-distributed Paisley Park Records. . . .Al B. Sure! has remixed the new Al Green single, “As Long as We’re Together,” and also appears in the video. . . . LL Cool J jammed 20 songs onto his new cassette, “Walking With a Panther.” Among them: “Smokin’ Dopin’,” “Big Ole Butt” and “1 900 LL Cool J” (which is also the number of a hot line that fans can dial to find out about the rap star’s new album and his June tour with Slick Rick). The CD version of “Panther” includes 18 songs; the LP contains 16.
