Rick Mears upstaged Indianapolis 500 champion Emerson Fittipaldi to win the pole position for the Miller High Life 200 today in Milwaukee.
Mears waited out a five-hour rain delay, then recorded a lap of 22.385 seconds and a speed of 160.822 m.p.h. in his Penske-Chevy.
That put him on the pole for today’s race ahead of Fittipaldi.
Earning spots in the second row were Michael Andretti, with a speed of 155.159 m.p.h. in a Lola-Chevy, and Bobby Rahal, at 154.752 m.p.h. in a Lola-Cosworth.
