Haunting: Since being traded by Boston to the Oakland Athletics before the 1983 season, Carney Lansford has hit .351 against the Red Sox, and .467 in his last eight games at Fenway Park.
A year’s difference: Pitchers Danny Jackson, Tom Browning, Frank Viola and David Cone have already matched their loss total of last year. Jackson has gone from 23-8 to 3-8; Browning from 18-5 to 5-5; Cone from 20-3 to 3-4, and Viola from 24-7 to 4-7.
Firsts: Detroit Tigers center fielder Gary Pettis, the former Angel, hit his first home run of the season Thursday night. It was also his first run batted in, after 61 at-bats.
Firsts II: The Baltimore Orioles are the first team since the inception of the amateur draft in 1965 to be in first place at the time they make the No. 1 pick. The Orioles won the rights to No. 1 by losing 107 games last year.
Streaking: The Milwaukee Brewers’ Rob Deer ended May by striking out at least once in 18 straight games, then opened June by striking out three times against the New York Yankees Thursday night for an American League-leading total of 59.
Quick read: The Brewers sent Mike Birkbeck to the minors with a 0-4 record, put Bill Wegman on the disabled list with a 2-6 record and are concerned about Don August, who is 4-6. Have the hitters developed a “book” on Manager Tom Trebelhorn’s young pitchers? “Maybe, but with some of the pitches they’ve been throwing, I’m not sure they’d have to read the book in advance to hit them,” he said.
Senior circuit: An attempt is being made to open a senior professional league for players 35 and older that would operate in Florida during the winter. Said Johnny Bench: “I guess it’s important to have a bunch of 40-year-old guys get rotator cuff surgery. I think the doctors are the ones who came up with the idea for this league.”
