Four Tied After First Round of Men’s Golf Championship

Four golfers shared a one-stroke lead after Saturday’s first round of the 57th San Diego Men’s Amateur Golf Championship at Torrey Pines Municipal Course.

Jonathon Perkins (representing Torrey Pines Golf Club), Jim Renner (Torrey Pines), Ken Earle (Rancho Bernardo Inn) and Barry Poynter (Torrey Pines) shot opening 71s at Torrey Pines South to lead after 18 holes of the 72-hole tournament that continues today.

Clark Renner (Torrey Pines) shot a 72, and Bill Lynott (Lomas Santa Fe), Robert Dickinson (Torrey Pines), Matt Reno (Stardust) and Steve Hasse (San Diego Country Club) shot 73s.

SURFING

Hometown favorite Mike Lambresi, the two-time defending U.S. champion, and top-seeded Bud Llamas of Huntington Beach were upset in qualifying rounds in the Professional Surfing Assn. of America’s $35,000 Oceanside Open at Harbor Beach.

Lambresi and Llamas are among five of the top 10 seeded surfers, including Solana Beach’s Doug Silva, who failed to qualify to today’s final rounds, which begin at 8 a.m. The finals are scheduled for approximately 12:30.

San Clemente’s Dino Andino, the 1988 runner-up to Lambresi, Cardiff’s Colin Smith, Del Mar’s Rick Lasch and Carlsbad’s Sean Mattison are among the 16 who will compete for the $6,000 first-place prize.

Oceanside’s David Cunniff and Leucadia’s Kevin Cerv advanced to the quarterfinals in the bodyboard division, which has a $1,500 first-place payoff.

SOCCER

A California State soccer license “E” may be obtained by attending a soccer clinic Monday night at 7 at Lemon Grove Recreation Center, 3731 School Lane.

Running the clinic will be George Logan, Valhalla High’s coach, and Rene Miramontes, Granite Hills’ coach. For information, call 670-1177 or 440-1501 (extension 331).

HALL OF CHAMPIONS

Charger Coach Dan Henning will speak at the Hall of Champions’ “Sports at Lunch” Thursday at noon. Tickets are $20 for members, $25 for non-members, with all proceeds benefitting the Balboa Park sports museum. Required reservations can be made by calling 234-2544.
