Boy in Stable Condition After Falling Into Mine

CRYSTAL CITY, Mo. — A 14-year-old boy who fell 35 feet down a mine shaft was reported in stable condition Tuesday after spending three hours waiting for rescuers to pull him out, authorities said. Thomas J. Whitmier suffered a broken back and broken ankle in the fall Monday evening, Crystal City Police Chief Glenn Boyer said.
