The third annual Johnny Grant Award Dinner on May 13 at the Los Angeles Registry Hotel netted more than $80,000 for the Arthritis Foundation’s San Fernando Valley Branch. Marsha and Larry Van Nuys were co-chairs.

The National Council of Jewish Women’s 80th Anniversary Auction/Dinner held at their Council House on May 13 netted $80,000 to be used for the the organization’s community service, Women Helping Women, which offers a telephone talk-line, career counseling service, support groups and educational programs. Susan Dey and Sonia Schneider were co-chairs.

Members of the Benefactors Council of the Westside Food Bank hosted at a dinner on May 20 at the home of actor Daniel J. Travanti and raised an estimated $13,444 for the food bank.

The Museum of Contemporary Art will receive $500,000 netted by the “gala cruise to nowhere” on May 27 hosted by Princess Cruises aboard its newest ship, the Star Princess. Brigitte Medvin, Sandy Smalley and Ronnie Stabler were co-chairs.

“The Phantom of the Opera” benefit at the Music Center on May 27 netted $250,000 for continued research for the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, Los Angeles Chapter.

The Amanda Foundation’s charity sale and silent auction on May 28 raised $22,000 to help reduce the $72,000 debt owed to veterinarians for sick and injured animals the foundation rescued from city animal shelters.

The Neil H. Jacoby International Award Dinner of the International Student Center at UCLA on May 31 netted $92,000. Honorees were Kirk and Anne Douglas. The organization welcomes foreign students and visitors to UCLA and helps promote understanding through programs that bring foreign and American students and members of the community together. Sylvia Schulman chaired. Co-chair was Rita Dashew.

The League of Women Voters of Los Angeles luncheon at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel on June 1 netted $35,000 for the league. The luncheon was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Honorary chairs were Maureen Kindel and Willie Brown. Bonny Matheson was chair.

The Opera Guild of Southern California’s concert on June 4 at Verdi-Ristorante Di Musica raised $1,700. Proceeds go to the guild’s award program for young opera singers and to bring opera to children in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The inauguration of the the new ship, the Spirit of Los Angeles, on a sunset cruise on June 4, raised an estimated $100,000 to help provide inpatient and outpatient eye care at the Eleanor and Arthur Ellis Eye Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Al and Miriam Winner were co-chairs.
