A 15-year-old Sun Valley boy driving a stolen automobile was killed Friday when the car struck a tree in North Hollywood, Los Angeles police said.

Four other juveniles, ages 14 and 15, fled the scene, but one of them later walked into the North Hollywood police station and gave detectives information about the accident.

The 15-year-old North Hollywood boy was questioned and taken into custody on suspicion of auto theft, police said.

Sgt. Bruce Herschong said the car involved in the accident was stolen about a month ago from a West Los Angeles street. The car was traveling west on Stagg Street at 8:30 a.m. when it struck the curb on the north side of the street, hit a tree, spun around and halted next to a fence, Herschong said.

The driver died at the scene and witnesses said the other youths fled. The informant was cut and bruised in the accident and said the other youths suffered similar injuries.

Herschong said the driver had not been drinking and was not speeding when the accident occurred.
