Filipinos in the Southland

Congratulations for focusing on the paradoxical Filipino community in Los Angeles. They are the largest Asian-Pacific ethnic group, the highest earners, the most numerous as professionals and yet they are invisible as an ethnic conclave in the multiethnic scene of Los Angeles.

I challenge the leaders of the Filipino community to dispense with rhetoric and rationalizations and start regrouping to develop the community. The talents and resources are there. The key is to tap it.

I challenge the people of Los Angeles to discover and experience Filipino products, cuisine, cultural events and shows which are only windows of the varied culture in the Philippines. The real values are intangible such as Filipino hospitality, “ utang na loob “ (a favor asked is a favor gained), respect for elders, and strong family ties. To experience this, one has to love a Filipino and be invited to his or her home and be part of the family.

Let’s not forget that it was the Filipino People Power that paved the way for today’s China People Power.
