Tests of four samples taken from wells and a spring near Rockwell International’s Santa Susana Field Laboratory show that the water is safe to drink, Ventura County officials said today.

The county offered to test the water after reports of radioactive and chemical contamination at the lab sparked concern about pollution threatening nearby ground water. The wells and spring whose water the county tested at a Santa Paula laboratory are about a mile and a half from the 2,668-acre lab.

Bob Gallagher, environmental resources manager for the Ventura County Environmental Health Department, said tests for radiation showed that the samples meet the state drinking water standards.
