WHBQ, the Memphis radio station that was the first to air Elvis Presley’s music, has exiled the king. WHBQ program director Ron Jordan banned Elvis records Monday until further notice. “It seems like we overdo the Elvis bit here,” said Jordan, whose station is rated next to last in Memphis. “It’s almost like stepping on the flag. I thought we’d pull back for a while.” WHBQ now has a classic hits format and Jordan, who began working as program director last week, said some listeners complained of being “Elvis’ed to death.” Not everyone is happy. DJ George Klein, a longtime Presley confidant, says he will quit if the Elvis ban isn’t lifted in two weeks.
