State Seeks Input on Removal of Asbestos, Lead
The state Department of Health Services will hold a community meeting in Atwater tonight to provide information on the ongoing removal of asbestos and lead residue from the site of the Franciscan Ceramics plant.
High levels of cancer-causing asbestos were found in December at several locations on the sprawling, 45-acre ceramics factory site at 2901 Los Feliz Blvd.
Previously, state health officials had found lead residue at the site from decades of ceramics manufacturing.
Since then, officials at Schurgin Development Corp. of Los Angeles, which purchased the site four years ago, say they have covered all suspected piles of asbestos on the site with plastic sheeting.
The company has been developing a state-mandated plan to dispose of the asbestos and the hazardous lead residue.
Schurgin plans to build a shopping center on the site.
The meeting from 7 to 10 tonight at Glenfeliz Elementary School, 3955 Glenfeliz Blvd., is to obtain community input on the proposed cleanup.
