Un-Covered

Turns out that Dennis Quaid won’t be getting that “Great Balls of Fire” cover on Rolling Stone after all--the one Orion Pictures told us was set. One explanation: Editors felt that with recent film covers on “Ghostbusters II” and “Batman,” a third on “Great Balls” would constitute a crowd. But there may be more to it than that.

Sources report that Quaid wouldn’t talk to RS writer Steve Pond when he visited the set during the shoot. The reason, sources add: RS wouldn’t guarantee Quaid’s publicist, Susan Geller, that her client would get a cover.

Geller told us that while she pushes for covers, Quaid had been uncooperative because he was too busy working. But, she stressed, he chatted with Pond after filming was completed--when the magazine allegedly told her a “Great Balls” cover was assured.

Orion declined comment, but we’re told the studio was so upset about the lost cover that the studio wouldn’t assist RS fact-checkers when they called.

The “Great Balls” piece will appear in RS’ upcoming double summer issue due later this month--the one with the Who as cover boys.
