The South Carolina state Senate approved a resolution asking baseball Commissioner Bart Giamatti to reinstate Shoeless Joe Jackson as a “member in good standing in organized baseball.”

Jackson and seven other Chicago White Sox players were accused of throwing the 1919 World Series to Cincinnati in what became known as the Black Sox scandal.

A jury found the players not guilty of attempting to “defraud the public,” but they were banned for life from major league baseball by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

The resolution, which goes to the state House for approval, is the latest attempt to clear Jackson’s name. The General Assembly passed similar resolutions in 1951 and 1985.
