THE SIDELINES : Yankees Out-Slug White Sox, 10-7
NEW YORK — Don Mattingly homered twice and Tom Brookens had three hits, including a go-ahead single in New York’s three-run seventh inning, as the Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 10-7 today.
New York led 6-1 before Jimmy Jones and new Yankee Greg Cadaret allowed Chicago to go ahead 7-6.
Mattingly’s second homer led off the seventh and tied the game against Shawn Hillegas, 3-7. Mattingly has 10 homers this season, all in Yankee Stadium. It was the 13th multiple-homer game of his career.
New York outhit the White Sox 15-13. Dave Gallagher led Chicago with four hits. The Yankees’ Steve Sax had three hits for the fourth time in six games.
Dave Righetti relieved to start the eighth and finished for his 12th save.
