Hoffman-La Roche Inc. is opening a facility in Anaheim to provide home drug therapy for patients who require regular treatments for diseases such as AIDS, cancer and cystic fibrosis.
The company, a subsidiary of Swiss drug maker Hoffman-La Roche & Co. AG, said home therapy could save up to 70% for some patients. For instance, Hoffman-La Roche estimated that cancer patients can receive in-home chemotherapy treatments for about $1,000 per month, compared to about $3,200 per month for treatments given in hospitals.
Vice President Susanne Loarie said that home therapy has become more feasible with the development of lighter-weight, more portable equipment and with newly developed drugs. The company said more than 250,000 Americans now receive drug therapy in their homes from private providers.
The Roche Professional Service Center will open Monday. The office is expected to serve a 100-mile radius.
Hoffman-La Roche is also opening a center in Northern California this month and has plans for more than 40 centers across the country by 1991.
