SPORTS : Decision on Rose Hearing Delayed Till Sunday, Judge Cites Complexity
An Ohio judge today delayed until Sunday a decision on Pete Rose’s request to block a scheduled hearing with Commissioner Bart Giamatti concerning gambling allegations against the Cincinnati Reds manager.
Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Norbert Nadel heard arguments for two days on Rose’s request for a temporary restraining order to delay the hearing with Giamatti, scheduled for Monday in New York.
Nadel, who said he had hoped to make his decision at the end of today’s hearing, said the matter was so complex that he will need more time and will announce his decision Sunday at noon.
Rose sued Giamatti earlier this week, asserting that the commissioner is biased and has already decided against him.
Should Rose be found to have bet on baseball, he could be suspended for a year; if found to have bet on his own team, he could be banned for life.
Rose wants the decision taken away from Giamatti and moved to a court.
