One Santa Ana man was killed and a second was wounded early Saturday when an argument over a hat led to a shooting on West 3rd Street, police said.
Santa Ana Police Sgt. Bob Clark said Alfonso O. Rodriguez, 19, was fatally shot and Abel Vergara, 28, was wounded in the arm as several men chased them down the street and shot at them. Vergara was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was listed in stable condition.
Vergara told police, Clark said, that he and Rodriguez had taken another man’s hat and that the shooting occurred as they were walking in the 1100 block of West 3rd. The two men were residents of West Third, Clark said. The shooting was not believed to be gang-related, he said.
Police said an investigation had begun but that no suspects had been identified.
