Victories by distance runners Keith Brantley and Brian Diemer and shotputter Mike Stulce helped the depleted United States men’s track and field team win the Four Nations meet at Birmingham, England.

The U.S. men finished with 216 points in the two-day meet, while Britain was second with 191, followed by the Soviet Union with 172 and West Germany with 152. Americans won nine of the 21 men’s events.

In the women’s competition, a 1-2 finish by world record-holder Galina Chistyakova and teammate Larisa Beresnaia in the long jump led the Soviet Union to a 10-point victory over the United States.
