Compton : College President Resigns for Job in New York
Edison O. Jackson is resigning as president of Compton Community College to become president of Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, N.Y., starting Sept. 1.
Jackson, who came to Compton in 1985, announced his resignation at a college trustees meeting Tuesday night after flying back from New York City, where he was named to his new post by Chancellor Joseph Murphy of the City University of New York.
Named after the slain civil rights leader, Medgar Evers College is one of 21 colleges and universities in the New York City system. Located in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, it offers two- and four-year degrees and has about 3,000 students and 260 faculty and staff members.
One of the college’s strongest academic areas, according to its spokeswoman Dr. Betty Shabazz, is the education department. Jackson, 46, holds a Ph.D. in education from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Compton’s board of trustees will hold a special meeting Saturday to name an interim college president and to launch its search for a permanent replacement.
