Sports Briefs : Seay Can’t Continue Career

Mark Seay, the Cal State Long Beach wide receiver who lost a kidney when he was shot while shielding his 3-year-old niece from gunfire at a party last Halloween, won’t play for the 49ers next season.

Seay, who received national attention for his heroism, was told that he will be medically ineligible by Athletic Director Corey Johnson.

Before he was shot, Seay caught 31 passes for 480 yards during his sophomore season.

“(Football) means so much to him,” Coach Larry Reisbig said. “He’s taking it hard.”

605 All-Star Game Friday

The 22nd annual 605 All-Star Football Game, matching graduating high school players from opposite sides of the San Gabriel River Freeway, will be played Friday night at 7:30 at La Mirada High School Stadium.

Among the players for the East, coached by Phil Bravo of Whittier Christian, are quarterback Greg Willig of St. Paul, linebackers Chris McHenry of La Mirada and Steve Hayes of Cerritos, wide receiver Deon Travers of California, defensive back Wallace Weatherspoon of Artesia and linemen Joe Fombay of Wilson and Craig Peterson of Millikan.

The West, coached by Dave Newell of Bell Gardens, will be led by Poly quarterback Michael Carter, El Rancho running back Ralph De LaTorre, Lynwood tackle Bryan Campbell, Jordan tackle Chris Thomas, Bell Gardens defensive back Mike Gilliam, Schurr linebacker Cesar Burgueno, Montebello tight end Mike Valenzuela and Paramount wide receiver Jean Boyd.

Proceeds from the game, sponsored by the La Mirada Kiwanis Club, will go to the 36 schools in the vicinity of the freeway.

Slam-n-Jam Gets All-Stars

Some of the best high school basketball players in the country will play in the sixth annual Slam-n-Jam Invitational Tournament July 17-22 at Cal State Long Beach.

Tournament participants, according to Issy Washington, director of the Slam-n-Jam developmental league, will include high school all-star teams from 13 states. There will be 12 teams from Southern California.

The most heralded player in the tournament will be 7-foot-5 Shawn Bradley of Castle Dale, Utah.

Among the local players will be Earnest Killum of Lynwood and Melvin Jones of Poly.
