U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Flag Burning as Protest

Share

Flag burning is repugnant and offensive to me. I consider people who burn the flag in protest against our government foolish. They want to provoke outrage and receive the maximum possible attention for their views. And it certainly works.

I also believe that we have a right to be fools, and I am glad of it. Flag burning is an ancient form of political expression which is not permitted in countries where loyalty and deference to the government are compelled.

Old Glory never fails to stir me, not because I am required to honor it, but because it is a symbol of freedom. I am convinced that my flag is glorious enough and magnificent enough to withstand the disrespectful treatment of a few fools.

I am glad the Supreme Court did not see fit to take away our freedom in order to protect the symbol of our freedom. Our freedom gives us strength that puts us head and shoulders above the citizens of China and Iran, where flag burning is forbidden.

The veterans’ groups who protest that thousands of men have died for our flag should reconsider. Thousands of men have died for what our flag represents. We must not chip away at our freedom.
