Escalante’s Math Program to Expand
A program of accelerated mathematics and science instruction headed by celebrated Garfield High School calculus teacher Jaime Escalante will be expanded this summer with a $457,033 grant from the National Science Foundation.
Escalante, who lost federal funds for the summer program three years ago, will hold the classes at East Los Angeles College. Five hundred and sixty students from predominantly Latino Garfield and Roosevelt high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District will receive the intensive instruction, according to the foundation.
In addition, Escalante, whose teaching success attracted national attention in the movie “Stand and Deliver,” will give daily lectures on his teaching techniques for elementary instructors.
The summer program will cost an estimated $1.5 million over three years. The Los Angeles Community College District will provide $900,720 and the Arco Foundation $150,000.
