The 1989 Colquitt County Teacher of the Year was fired for growing marijuana in her back yard, although her husband insisted the pot belonged to him and was hidden from his wife.

Vicki Sherling held her hands to her face and sobbed as Colquitt County School Board members argued for three hours Tuesday night, then deliberated 15 minutes before voting, 5 to 1, to dismiss her for “immorality.”

A county grand jury earlier indicted the Sherlings on charges of growing marijuana. They were arrested May 19 when police discovered 22 marijuana plants growing in their yard.
