Fishing : Sand Bass and Calicos Fashion Hot Summer for Anglers

Summer fishing is hot. The transition from spring to summer surface fishing is bending rods and busting tackle.

Sand bass continue to set the angling pace. Joining the limit catches of sandies, calico bass now have started biting anything in their path resembling food.

The hot spots on day and twilight trips are Horseshoe Kelp and Rocky Point. Fishing at Catalina Island with live squid brings a wide-open bite.

The Outerlimits from L.A. Harbor Sportfishing worked Catalina over the weekend and 36 white sea bass were caught.

George Hawking of West Los Angeles caught the whopper and the jackpot with his 38-pounder.

Chuck Graham of Lomita had a 37-pounder among his three-fish limit.

Ten-year-old Victor Oranelas of San Pedro had never caught a white sea bass, but the novice angler brought to gaff two 25-pounders and a 30-pounder.

Bob Holden of San Pedro caught two 25-pounders, then bounced a 20-pounder to the deck.

James Hamada of West Los Angeles nailed two 24-pounders and a 22-pounder.

Jim Sujuki of Inglewood had the three-catch limit, including a 25-pounder.

The Cabo Assn. of Boat Owners held its second 1989 catch-and-release tournament Sunday at Horseshoe Kelp.

Eighty-eight boats participated, with limits of bass caught and released. Only large fish went into the bags to determine the grand prize.

The winner was Ron Wilson of Long Beach, with a 3-pound, 15-ounce sand bass.

SOUTH BAY NOTES:

Alicia Frank of West Los Angeles, fishing aboard the Sea Jay, used a halibut rig and caught the jackpot fish, a 40-pound halibut.

Lloyd Doyle of Torrance, on the Aztec, won the jackpot with a Catalina white sea bass that weighed 32 pounds.

Duane McCuthen of Redondo Beach, at Catalina Island aboard the Blackjack, caught a 28-pound halibut.

Frank Gasperou of San Pedro, fishing aboard the new Shogun at Catalina, caught a 27 1/2-pound white sea bass.

Sportfishing: At Marina Del Rey Sportfishing: The Spitfire found the sand bass and anglers caught 340, plus three halibut.

The Happyman chalked up 310 sand bass on a half-day trip.

The rock cod special Betty O connected for 300 rock cod.

At Redondo Sportfishing: Anglers on the Sea Spray, fishing Rocky Point, sacked 601 sand bass, five halibut and two barracuda.

The Redondo Special on two half-day trips returned with 774 sand bass and seven halibut.

The Blackjack fished Catalina and anglers sacked 198 calico bass, 83 barracuda, 17 bonito and two halibut.

The barge Isle of Redondo had a mack attack over the weekend, with 3,995 mackerel landed plus 11 barracuda.

The Crest fished Rocky Point and returned with 60 sand bass, 22 barracuda and 15 sculpin.

At 22nd Street Landing: The First String worked the flats and returned with 603 sand bass, 30 barracuda and 20 calico bass.

Anglers on the Monte Carlo on a half-day trip to Horseshoe Kelp hooked 117 calico bass, 53 barracuda and 31 sand bass.

At L.A. Harbor Sportfishing: The Sportking on a twilight trip chalked up 469 sand bass and 23 barracuda.

The Matt Walsh on a half-day trip worked the Rockpile and anglers sacked 47 calico bass, 34 barracuda, 25 sculpin and three cabezon.

The Shogun tried Catalina and anglers scored with 210 bonito, 120 calico bass and 15 yellowfin croaker.

The Annie B barge weekend count totaled 950 mackerel, 401 jacksmelt and five halibut.

At Long Beach Sportfishing: The Victory fished the oil rigs and 395 sand bass, 41 calico bass and two barracuda went into the sacks.

The Chieftain fished the flats where anglers caught 155 sand bass, 25 calico bass and 16 barracuda.

The Aztec worked Catalina and found the barracuda, with anglers catching 215 and a white sea bass.

The Toronado headed to Catalina and returned with 245 barracuda, 21 calico bass and three white sea bass.

VALLEY NOTES:

Doctors from Panorama City Community Hospital normally take Wednesday off to golf. Last week, instead of hitting a bucket of golf balls, a group went deep-sea fishing on a special doctors charter to Catalina aboard the El Dorado out of Long Beach Sportfishing.

The 31 doctors caught a limit of calico bass.

Dr. Milton Beck was the jackpot winner with his 25-pound white sea bass.

Dr. Herb Dorphlin was the bag weight winner. With help from his daughter he had the calico bass limit. The total weighed 60 pounds.

Dr. Barak Glass was awarded the barracuda catch of the day with a 7 1/2-pounder.

Dr. Shivhays Singh caught the largest calico bass, 6 3/4 pounds.

Sportfishing: At Port Hueneme Sportfishing: George Sanders of Simi Valley, fishing on the Erna B, won the jackpot with his 8 1/2-pound calico bass.

The Eagle fished Hueneme coast and anglers chalked up 185 calico bass, 30 sand bass, 10 rockfish and one barracuda.

The Ellie M anglers sacked 90 calico bass, 30 sand bass and a barracuda.

At Ciscos Oxnard: The Sea Watch fished the outside kelp and anglers returned with 211 calico bass, 20 sand bass and one halibut.

The Island Tac worked the shore kelp and landed 120 calico bass and three white sea bass.

Freshwater: Lee Hunt of Northridge, fishing at Castaic Lake, used spinbait and caught and released an 11 1/2-pound bass.

Anthony Miller of North Hollywood landed a 14-pound catfish at Castaic Lake.

Russell Schultz of Van Nuys fished Santa Ana River Lakes and landed 22 pounds of catfish.
