A world-renowned atmospheric scientist has been named founding chair of the new geosciences department at UC Irvine, in an academic coup that is expected to enhance the university’s already lofty standing in the research field. Ralph Cicerone, senior scientist and director of the atmospheric chemistry division of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., will begin work at UCI on July 1, Harold Moore, dean of the college of physical sciences, said. Cicerone is considered one of the world’s leading experts studying the so-called “greenhouse effect,” warming of the atmospheric gases that potentially can raise global temperatures.
