Six young musicians have received recognition from Local 7 of the Orange County Musicians’ Assn. Four received cash scholarship awards from the Douglas Sawtelle Memorial Scholarship fund for overall musical excellence:

--First Place, $800: to violist Si-Fei Cheng, 17, from Irvine.

--Second Place, $400: to violinist Keith Redpath, 18, Irvine.

--Third Place, $200: to cellist Hans Brightbill, 18, Laguna Niguel.

--Fourth Place, $100: to flutist Courtney Smith, 18, Yorba Linda.

An honorable mention went to pianist Tricia Whalstrom, 17, of Mission Viejo.

Jonathan Russell Nieman, 18, of El Toro, was awarded $500 from the Mick Price Memorial Scholarship fund for excellence in jazz or pop music. Nieman plays vibraphone and marimba.
