Pope John Paul II will send a special envoy to Warsaw for final negotiations establishing diplomatic relations between the Holy See and his native Poland, the Vatican announced. Poland will become the first Warsaw Pact country to have full diplomatic ties with the Vatican. Previous relations were ended by the Communists, who took power in Poland in 1945. In a letter to Cardinal Josef Glemp, Poland’s primate, John Paul said he is ready to dispatch a diplomatic representative to Warsaw even before completion of an accord. The pontiff did not name his envoy in the letter.
