Harvard broke a course record for the second time within three days at the Henley Regatta Saturday when its heavyweight varsity eight reached the final of the Ladies’ Plate with a 2 1/2-length victory over Ivy League rival Pennsylvania.

The win was achieved in 6 minutes 16 seconds, which was seven seconds faster than the previous Ladies’ Plate record set by Brown University in 1984 and equaled by the University of London in 1987 and the Mercantile Rowing Club of Australia last year.

In today’s final, Harvard will face Britain’s Notts County A.

The Thames Cup saw better luck for Penn, which reached the semifinals with a comfortable win over Edinburgh University.

Meanwhile, the Dutch Olympic champions, Ronald Floryn and Nico Rienks, beat the 1987 world champions from Bulgaria, Vasil Radev and Danail Yordanov, in the double sculls.

The former world champions from the Soviet Union, twin brothers Yuri and Nicolai Pimenov, lost in the silver goblets to Britain’s Olympic gold medalist, Steve Redgrave, and his new partner, Simon Berrisford.
