Imprisoning former presidential aide Oliver L. North would encourage high officials to make their subordinates take responsibility for “legally or politically risky” ventures, defense lawyers argued in court papers. “A sentence of imprisonment would be cruel and unjust,” defense lawyers said in response to independent counsel Lawrence E. Walsh’s request that North be sent to prison. North, 45, who is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday, faces a possible 10-year prison sentence for three felony convictions arising from his participation in the Iran-Contra affair.
