Dalai Lama in L.A., Takes the Day Off

The Fourth of July was a day off for the Dalai Lama, the globe-traveling Tibetan leader in exile who arrived in Los Angeles on Monday for a 17-day visit.
“He needed a rest,” said Betty Rogers, a spokeswoman for the spiritual and political leader, who is staying at a Santa Monica home overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Rogers said the Tibetan Buddhist monk had an intensive schedule in Costa Rica and Mexico last weekend and will begin a crowded schedule of private and public events today with visits to Buddhist temples in Los Angeles’ Koreatown and Hacienda Heights.
After a private birthday celebration Thursday in Malibu with friends and associates, Rogers said, the Dalai Lama will meet with the press Friday and give a public talk at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Shrine Auditorium. Preparations begin next week for advanced teaching ceremonies in Santa Monica from July 16 to 19--rites that he has led only a few times in Western countries since escaping Chinese military repression in Tibet 30 years ago.
