City Council Votes to Ban All Wood Shake, Shingle Roofs
The Los Angeles City Council today voted 12 to 1 to ban all wood shake and shingle roofs on new homes in the city in accord with fire department officials who consider the roofs a danger, especially during high winds.
The vote came during the first reading of an ordinance and since it was not unanimous, the council will vote again on the measure next week when a simple majority is needed.
Subsequent to the vote, Michael Westfall, president of the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau, said he would take the city to court if the ordinance becomes effective.
