WASHINGTON — White House Deputy Press Secretary B. Jay Cooper will become the Republican National Committee’s communications director Aug. 1, Administration officials confirmed today.
Cooper will replace Mark Goodin, who resigned under fire last month after disseminating a memo attacking House Speaker Thomas S. Foley (D-Wash.). The new director will work under RNC Chairman Lee Atwater, overseeing a large research and communications staff. Cooper entered the White House in 1987 as a protege of Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater.
