Ford Motor Co. will build a $120-million plant in Portugal to make automobile radios, compact disc players and other audio components, the company said today.

An agreement to build the 230,000-square-foot plant was signed by Oscar B. Marx III, executive director of Ford’s Automotive Components Group, and Joaquim Ferreira do Amaral, Portugal’s minister of commerce and tourism.

The plant, about 40 miles from Lisbon on the Setubal peninsula, will begin operations in 1992 and employ about 1,700 people. Its products will be used mostly in Ford assembly plants in Europe, said spokeswoman Maureen Mazzatenta.
