4 Dodgers, 2 Angels Are Named All-Stars

Willie Randolph and Steve Sax, second baseman who exchanged uniforms, were selected as All-Star reserves Thursday.

Randolph, a five-time All-Star with the New York Yankees, signed as a free agent with the Dodgers and is hitting .289.

Sax, a three-time All-Star as a Dodger, signed with the Yankees and is hitting .324.

Three other Dodgers and two Angels were among the remaining reserves and pitching staff chosen by the league presidents and the two managers--Tommy Lasorda of the National League and Tony LaRussa of the American League--for Tuesday night’s All-Star game at Anaheim Stadium.

The Angels will be represented by pitcher Chuck Finley and outfielder Devon White on the AL team.

The Dodgers will have Randolph, pitchers Orel Hershiser and Jay Howell and catcher Mike Scioscia on the NL team.

Other teams with four All-Stars are St. Louis, Oakland and Texas.

The AL said Thursday that Jose Canseco of the Athletics will not play in the All-Star game because of a season-long wrist injury. He was voted to the starting team by the fans despite not playing this year. Canseco originally said he wanted to play but later agreed with LaRussa that he would sit out the game.

A broken toe will sideline New York Mets outfielder Darryl Strawberry, also selected as a starter.

Heading the AL pitching staff will be the Rangers’ Nolan Ryan, 42, a seven-time All-Star who hadn’t been selected since 1985.

Joining Ryan on the AL staff are the A’s Dave Stewart and Mike Moore, Cleveland’s Greg Swindell and Doug Jones, Kansas City’s Mark Gubicza, the Rangers’ Jeff Russell, Detroit’s Mike Henneman, Milwaukee’s Dan Plesac and Finley.

Mike Scott (14-4) heads the NL pitching staff, which includes Rick Reuschel of San Francisco, John Smoltz of Atlanta, Tim Burke of Montreal, Mark Davis of San Diego, John Franco of Cincinnati, Mitch Williams of Chicago and Hershiser and Howell.

In the AL infield, the reserves are first baseman Don Mattingly of New York, third basemen Kelly Gruber of Toronto and Gary Gaetti of Minnesota and shortstop Tony Fernandez of the Blue Jays. The reserve catcher is Baltimore’s Mickey Tettleton.

The AL outfield reserves are Boston’s Mike Greenwell, Chicago’s Harold Baines, the Rangers’ Ruben Sierra and Seattle’s Jeffrey Leonard and White.

NL reserve third basemen are Howard Johnson of the Mets, Bobby Bonilla of Pittsburgh and Tim Wallach of Montreal. One of them will replace Philadelphia’s Mike Schmidt, who was voted the starter but will not play since he retired last month.

Other NL infield reserves are Glenn Davis of Houston and Pedro Guerrero of the Cardinals at first base and Barry Larkin of the Reds at shortstop. Tony Pena of the Cardinals and Scioscia are backup catchers.

In the NL outfield, Vince Coleman of the Cardinals, Eric Davis of the Reds, Andre Dawson of the Cubs and Von Hayes of the Phillies were selected.

Starting replacements for Schmidt, Strawberry and Canseco will be announced Monday.

The NL starters, announced Wedneday are catcher Benito Santiago of San Diego, first baseman Will Clark of San Francisco, second baseman Ryne Sandberg of Chicago, shortstop Ozzie Smith of St. Louis and outfielders Kevin Mitchell of San Francisco and Tony Gwynn of San Diego.

The AL starters are catcher Terry Steinbach of Oakland, first baseman Mark McGwire of Oakland, second baseman Julio Franco of Texas, shortstop Cal Ripken of Baltimore, third baseman Wade Boggs of Boston and outfielders Bo Jackson of Kansas City and Kirby Puckett of Minnesota.
