R. S. Neuschatz; Served on L.A. Parks Board

Royce Schaffer Neuschatz, former Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks commissioner and a regional planning consultant, died Saturday of cancer in Santa Barbara.

She was 56 and was on the faculty of the Department of Landscape Architecture, School of Environmental Design, at Cal Poly Pomona.

Ms. Neuschatz was a regional planner for the Southern California Assn. of Governments from 1972 to 1975, helping coordinate open-space planning and park bond programs, and served on the Recreation and Parks Commission from 1978 to 1984.

She was an ardent proponent of parkland while on the commission, voting against efforts to establish a landfill in Griffith Park and the construction of the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum at the same park.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the old zoo picnic area in Griffith Park.
