A 12-year-old boy driving a stolen car led sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed, 15-minute chase early Tuesday that ended when he tried to run over one of them, authorities said.

A stolen, unloaded AK-47 assault rifle was found in the car after the El Monte boy was arrested, Deputy Pat Hunter said.

Deputies tried to stop the stolen car in Altadena about 12:45 a.m., Hunter said.

The boy refused to stop and led deputies on a chase through Pasadena and Altadena at speeds up to 65 m.p.h.

The boy, whose name was withheld because of his age, drove the car onto an embankment as he attempted to enter the eastbound Foothill Freeway.

“As deputies approached the stolen car on foot, the subject suddenly accelerated the vehicle at the deputies,” Hunter said.

One deputy suffered a slight injury to a knee as he jumped to avoid being struck by the car, Hunter said.

The boy was arrested without further incident, he said.
